Standard items confrom to international standards such as ISO, VDI, NAAMS, etc.and should be used in the design of moulds and die sets. As sizes and tolerancing is standard, the design of moulds become easier and replacement parts are more readily available.
Fang Piercing Punches
Our range of developed punches and dies are made to international standards and with world class steels. Base materials that are more compatible with certain coatings are used rather than traditional materials, however these steels are still tough, chip resistant and of high strength to handle punch stresses. Punches can be supplied as straight or stepped tips.
Spring loaded ejectors can also be included in most punch designs.

Coatings For Punches
The TD coated punches are very high performance parts, with the TD coating being highly resistant to pick-up and wear. Conventional work materials and difficult-to-work materials can be easily and cleanly punched and increases in life of up 20 times have been found. The punches are very resistant to edge chipping and breakage, and are a very cost effective, high performance solution.The TD coating is exceptionally hard (90 HRC), but very tough and can take severe punishment. The coated punches can also be sharpened and re-used. The high bonding strength of the coating ensures it remains on the sharp cutting edge without peeling, while the flank wear resistance is maintained.
The TiAlN NANO coated punches are highly resistant to pick-up and adhesion. The NANO-punches can be used on conventional mild steels, difficult steels such as stainless steels, and other non-ferrous materials such as copper and aluminium. The NANO coating lends itself to high precision parts and hence even thin plastics and foils can be punched.

Uncoated punches can be supplied. Here we offer excellent quality and economy vs other brand punches imported from the USA and Europe. These precision-made items are tough yet durable and comparable with international class items, for short to medium production runs. Most common material selection is HSS but other materials are available on request.

The FANG range of dies are long lasting parts where the sharp cutting edge assists the punch in piercing a hole. The dies can be re-sharpened as the coating will still preserve the sharp cutting edge and reduce drag.
The short land dies mean a standard punch stroke to clear the slug, whilst getting good life from the die. Standards are made to ISO 8977, or as specified.
FANG Pilot and Burring Punches
Pilot punches are made from high strength cold work steel, and TD coated to ensure extreme resistance to wear, pick-up and sticking. Parts slide and locate easily on the pilots. Critical dimensions of the pilot are also maintained for longer which assists in producing consistent parts.
The FANG burring punches maintain the sharpness of the piercing tip, while coatings ensure the part is highly resistant to pick-up and scoring on the forming edge. Resistance to pickup on the extruded/ironed flanks of the part also increases subsequent tap life.
Locating pins are used for accurately placing and locating parts. Our coated parts are very resistant to wear, scoring and loss of dimensions on the pins. Where consistent accuracy is required, such as in high precision welding operations, our range of locating pins should be used. TD has proven to be the best coating for this application.
Ejector pins/Knockout Pins
Our ejector pins are generally made from hot work tool steel due to its inherent toughness but are not only for hot applications. Pins are supplied either coated or uncoated depending on customers requirements. Diffox, TiAlN-Nano or ARMOLOY are mostly used for a smooth, anti-stick sliding surface with high corrosion resistance.With the coatings, this also helps prevent wear on the ejector hole, especially in casting applications. Custom ejectors can be made such as flat blade ejectors, HSS ejectors and special diameter and length items.
Similar to ejector pins, Knockout pins are used in cold to warm applications (~400 °C). With a higher base metal hardness of 58 – 60 HRc, the pins can take high stress without deforming. Pins are either TD coated for extreme resistance to wear and pick-up, or NANO coated to ensure smooth sliding and long life.

The TD Coating Centre can manufacture parts from a full range of hot and cold work steels, high speed steels, Powder Metallurgical High Speed Steels. Matching the correct steel and coating with the application not only ensures durability but can offer the best overall economy and means we can accommodate applications from mild to wild. Performance from a special steel is also heavily influenced by heat treatment specifications as one grade can offer a range of differing properties based on its selected heat treatment. We are very familiar with these interactions and can specify the parameters to enhance the best performance from these special steels.
In order to offer complete wear solutions, the TD Coating Centre can also manufacture from cemented carbide (aka tungsten carbide). Solid carbide tooling offers the highest base hardness throughout the tool and as such is an excellent base for thin film coatings. Tungsten carbides with a cobalt binder content of over 10% can be TD coated, whilst all tungsten carbides can be PVD coated with TiN or TiAlN for further wear resistance.
